Arthur had worked as a clerk and living at 562 Greaqt Cheetham St, Broughton, prior to joining the Army. He attested on the 39th of March 1915 at the age of 19. His mother asked a friend to write to the Army on August the 18th asking about Arthur's "whereabouts" as she had not had a letter from him since July 27th and all her letters to him had been returned marked "wounded, present location unknown". His father wrote to the Army again in September 1915 stating that they had received a letter from Rifleman P Johnson (11847) informing them that Arthur had been killed in action. Up intil this letter the family had been informed that Arthur was missing.
