William attested on the 2nd of February 1915 at the age of 30. At this time he gave his address as 73 Rosebury St, Moss Side, his occupation as postman and he stated that he had served with the 3rd Volunteers Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. Posted to the 1/6th Royal Scots service number 2953 (later changed to 43036). To Alexandria sometime in 1915, left Alexandria on the 8th May 1916 arriving at Marseilles on the 16th of May 1916.In August 1916 he was attached to the 11th Battalion and posted to the 11th in September.
There is a page in his service record that asks:
"In the event of this man being (a) promoted to commission or (b) transferred to another regiment or (c) reported missing or (d) reported to be dead it is requested that the Officer in Charge, Army Record Office, will kindly inform" The Secretery of the GPO, London.
Ida and William had one child John
The 1901 census shows William living with his parents at 129 Maud St, Broughton.

1911 census - Alfred is shown as a 15 year old office boy living with his parents, Joseph and Mary, at 117 St Stephen Rd, Greengate. Also present at this address are his step sisters Sarah Ann and Mary Jane Howard, step brother Thomas Howard, brothers Joseph and Frank, and sisters Gladys and Winifred.
Synopsis from Hell Let Loose by Neil Drum and Roger Dowson:- Prior to joining the Army Alfred had been working at a wire works on Queens Rd, Manchester. He was killed whilst trying to knock out an enemy machine gun with his machine gun. Alfred had been the number 1 (the man that fires the gun) in his crew, after his death the number 2 took his place and was also killed, the two men were buried in the same grave. In 1918 Alfred's father Joseph William Catlin was serving in the East Yorkshire Regiment (202214) and his brother Joseph William was serving with the Royal Flying Corps (3/AM 245799).

Albert was a 13 year old schoolboy when the 1911 census was taken. He was living at 309 Great Cheetham St East, Broughton, with his parents William and Julia, and siblings Alice, William, Harold and Jessie. Albert was obviously an underage soldier. I will try and find some more details when I visit the SLHL.

hiya gaz. albert cluff was already serving before the war began,his CO would have known his age,it was up too his CO if he would have been allowed to go overseas with his battalion,the manchester brigade were originally going to egypt as garrison troops so his CO would have allowed him to go with the rest of the battalion because he wasnt expected to have been in a active service zone,things changed shortly after,and kids like albert were thrown into the action at gallipoli with all the rest.
