When commanding a company in the front line, he opened rapid fire upon a hostile patrol which was attempting to enter the trench, and then led his party over the parapet in full view of the enemy, by his personal courage and fearless example dispersing them with loss and taking several prisoners.James was born in Church, Accrington, on the 20th September 1885. He had three brothers Richard (James' twin) Harry and Edward, and a siter Gladys. Edward also died during the war(see below). James, a fitter, was aged 18 when he attested on the 11th of December 1915. He gave his address as 9 Hartis St, Broughton, the son of Lewis and Ellen Halmshaw. Assigned the number 32763 with the Lancashire Fusiliers. Home 11/12/1915 to 19/12/1917 Transferred to The Monmouthshire Regiment 03/05/1916 and later to the South Lancashire Regiment France 20/12/1917 to 23/03/1918 when he was reported as missing, presumed dead. James' mother was still writing to the Army in 1920 asking them for answers with regards to his death, she still believed that "he is not dead".
