Hi all - new here and just wondered if anyone could help me with some more info about the Salford HG units?
My grandad was one Richard Charles Donaldson and he was a Lancashire fusilier territorial in the twenties, after serving all the way through WW1 in the Manchester Regt. I have no definite proof he was in the Salford home guard but it is very likely given his background and character.
This said, can anyone out there point me in the right direction to find out more?
Thanks in advance,

Hi & welcome, without meaning to drag you away from this forum. I know the Manchester regiment forum are compiling information on the home guard but not sure if they are or intend to cover Salford?

Thanks Ben as I've never seen that absent voters list before - yes that is him in 1918 when he was away fighting for the Manchester regt. in France, though I see it doesn't list that for some reason.
Re the unit listing the only thing is I can only ever find the name of the 43rd in HG lists but nothing more. I know there are other threads on here with the same problem too.
I thought perhaps it might be worth trying the medal record route for the defence medal (at least it would tell me he served) and have just been sent the form from the mod. I'll try that and let you know if I have any luck.
Thanks again.

Oh ! do let me know how you get on. I have never know any who has applied for Home guard records before and would like to know what you get ( that is if they do manage to anything) in regards records? Might be worth you having a quick read on what the nation archives have on this matter. Click for the N.A. page for the home guardBen

Ok will do - it's not actually HG records though, just a medal record. Let's see what it turns up, fingers crossed!

He had a couple in the duration, but demobbed with 31901 for the 2nd East Lancs, having been in 3rd and 2/9 Manchester Regt. There was this letter with his pension records, which also extend right up to the end of his territorial service in 1928 - it proved a really nice find for my mum, who saw her Dad's handwriting for the first time since he died in 1955:

Wow Mack that's incredible. Thanks so much for going to the trouble. You're right about his marriage as that was my Grandmother whom I knew obviously as Grandma Donaldson.
I didn't know about his brother so I will work down that line too.
In terms of his HG connection, it only occurred to me yesterday that he would have probably been in a Manchester unit given his proximity (Greengate being on the outskirts of Manchester) so I think I might have to pay the £30 fee and apply to the army records for them to do a search for me.
Thanks again,
Darren

Sorry Mack just noticed one more thing - you mention a son called William which is a complete shock if it's true as we have no record of him being born, just the other three you mention. If this is the case he would be my uncle.
Where did you get this info from and are you sure this is correct?

That's great - thanks. I've found William on ancestry.co.uk so I'll order the birth and death certificate for him.
