This item about Private Maurice Kaminsky being awarded the Military Medal appeared in the MEN of 11 November 1944. However, Maurice had been killed nearly a fortnight earlier, on 28th October. He was serving with the 8th Bn. of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders who were very much involved in the fighting on the River Santerno in Italy. He is buried in the Santerno Valley War Cemetery with five others from his regiment killed the same day. He was the youngest child of Abraham Kaminsky & his wife Mary (nee Kanner). The MEN duly reported his death on 17th Nov, and today the CWGC list him as a Lance Corporal. (Apparently, Kaminsky is the sixth most common surname in Poland.)
Although his school Salford Grammar School had a war memorial for the 74 who died in the Great War, commissioned by the Old Salfordians' Association, there never was one for the dead of WW2. Given the size of the WW2 memorials for Eccles GS (39), De La Salle (40) and Ashton-under-Lyne GS (49) I think a WW2 memorial for SGS could easily have had fifty names on it. As it is, I know of just one other man who would have been on it, 33 year old Pilot Officer (Observer) Robert Hilary Vaughan of 147 Lancaster Road, opposite Light Oaks Primary School. Details of any others would be very welcome.

Maurice Kaminsky sister married(Jeanette Kaminsky)Harry Leslie Norton 1939, she died June 1974 and is buried in Blackley Jewish cemetery. I wounder if Maurice Kaminsky's name is inscribed on her grave? I also think his mother Mary Kaminsky nee Kanner is also buried in Blackley Jewish cemetery 1972. Ben

The teacher who gave this invaluable advice explained that whenever he had been familiar with the inside story behind a newspaper report, he had invariably spotted an error in the report. Regrettably there is one in the 1944 report of Maurice Kaminsky's Military Medal - he was a former pupil not of Salford Grammar School but of Manchester Grammar School. Old Salfordian
