Hi Toby, I am not Debs, hope I will do for now. I presume that this is your Richard shown as living at 121 Marriotts Court, Salford in 1901 census? I cannot see a pension or service record for him. I can only find his medal index card which gives very little information - his name, number, rank and the fact that he was awarded the British and Victory war medals. Attachments:

Phil,
I have done a quick check of close numbers on the Salford absent voters list. Here are the results:
306631 L.-Cpl., 1/8th L.Fus 306632 Pte.. 1/8th Lancs. Fus. 306628 Pte., 1/8th L. F . 306683 Pte., 2/8 Lancs. Fus. 306626 Pte., 1/8th L.F. 306620 Pte., 1/8th'L.F.
and a man who died who has the next number after Richard's:
Name: Henry Bowling Birth Place: Salford, Lancs Death Date: 20 Apr 1917 Death Location: France & Flanders Enlistment Location: Salford Rank: Private Regiment: Lancashire Fusiliers Battalion: 2/8th Battalion Number: 306648 Type of Casualty: Died of wounds Theatre of War: Western European Theatre
The above seems to indicate some consistency in how the numbers were allotted but please be aware that service numbers can be a minefield and I am no expert.

It might be worth you asking Mack to check the Collyhurst/Milesplatting absent voters list as the family were living at 47 Baguley street after 1901.
Ops should have mentioned the address is in Manchester ;D

Men serving in the Territorial Force got new six digit numbers in 1917, only the six digit number appears on his medal index card, so he did not go overseas until after the new numbers were issued to the regiments.
2/7th Battalion Formed at Salford in August 1914 as a home service ("second line") unit . 8 February 1915 : attached to 197th Brigade, 66th (2nd East Lancashire) Division. April 1918 : reduced to cadre strength after taking heavy casualties. 30 June 1918 : returned to England, transferred to 74th Brigade, 25th Division and moved to Aldershot. 9 July 1918 : disbanded and reformed as 24th Bn (see below).

Ops should have mentioned the address is in Manchester ;D Ben, I am sure that I have read that you have a copy of all the Manchester AVLs (please excuse me if I am wrong). Would you be kind enough to do the look up for Phil? After all we are all here to help one another. Cheers, Garry

Hi Gary, i said i had many not all of the AVL. The ones i hold have now been donated to the Manchester & Salford family history forumI originally scanned and put the Salford AVL on cd for mack some years back. My intention was always to make them available to every one and for free, but i found that others were not willing to do this. Congratulations on your collaboration with the M&LFHS on producing the two sections you have as searchable PDF. I have spoken to the owners of the M&SFHF about your project and they would be willing to let M&LFHS have copies of all AVL they hold if the rest that mack holds were also mad available to us all.

Ben,
That is a kind gesture, if the Manchester and Salford forum are unable to index them I can put you in contact with a very kind gentleman from the M&LFHS who you can speak to.
I cannot answer on other peoples behalf, I have been told that the M&LFHS have been thinking of doing the Manchester AVLs for a while and are willing to approach Manchester Libraries directly for a full copy of the Manchester AVLs.
I think that we all know how difficult it is to start research on a family member who served during the Great War if they have a common name and there isn't any information/heirlooms handed down from family members that give a service number or regiment. These AVLs, if made available, would be a great start for the mens descendents to start that research and remember the men named in them.

May I make it clear that SWARM will not be posting/hosting any of the Manchester AVLs. Whilst we would gladly assist anyone with the aim to making them more widely available.

Well this will be a win win situation for everyone. This way everyone can get a copy and for free i presume? Fingers crossed M&LFHS get the access to ALL AVL's.
I think we seem to be getting a little off the original topic here?
Tobytyler191148, i would try and check the absent voters list for the address i gave above at the city library, deangate Manchester.
