This memorial is in the cellars of Salford Library with your help we would like to find out where it was once sited. The image of St George may prove a vital cue or it may just be a representation of the struggle of the men to overcome the strength of the German War Machine. Attachments:

To the right of the picture of St George is a thin piece of wood attached by screws. It reads;
1939 - 1945 Harold Shaw Geoffrey Day Phillip M Brasted Frank Davis

I read the inscription on the top as a letter M entwined with the letters U, S & A. If we can identify where this was from we may be able to canvas a church/public building within the original vicinity to re-house this memorial. Any help gratefully appreciated. Attachments:

I'm still thinking about it. The inscription "The last full measure of devotion" came from the Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln. Still no closer though. I tried American links in Salford (USA is part of the badge) but got no further.

Thanks Pete and Mack, Here is a capture of Pte Wilkinson's NOK sheet that shows the Minister's name. If we can work out the name we may be able to nail this. Attachments:

the methodist churches on the heights did some rearranging in between the wars,eventually the westwood church+bolton rd church became the methodist union church and school,maybe they stuck the memorial in the library when they had the new church built on the height the A could be a C,you can never tell with this kind of lettering

If you plot out all the addresses mentioned above, the memorial seems to cover all of Salford, from Swinton in the west to the east part of Salford near Trinity Way. I'd guess it was quite a select school as people seemed to be willing to travel to go there.

Private Wilkinson's NOK sheet was signed by Revd Thomas Jukes of 7 Duffield St, Salford (United Meth). *Source: 1918 Slaters*
Private Wilkinson joined the 3rd City Battalion on the 24th Aug 1914. He underwent training at White City, Heaton Park, Grantham and then Salisbury Plain, entering France on the 6th Nov 1915.
David was killed due to an enemy shell explosion. This occurred whilst he was showing a soldier, who was new to that trench, where he could obtain water. In a letter received by David's parents they are told that he was not disfigured in any way and that he had died due to concussion from the blast.
Prior to the war he worked in the warehouse of Mr Thomas Collier, High St, Manchester. He was a regular attender at the United Methodist Church and School, Irlams o th Height and was on the Roll of Honour at that place of worship. His family received many letters of condolences from the Bible Class and Young Men's Class at that church. He had a brother who was serving with the 7th Lancashire Fusiliers. *Source: Salford Reporter*
Well done Mack.
